Chapter 16

The dead were out in force. Even though Cheryl was busy thinking about the Lees and trying to figure out the best way to help them, she got caught up in another ghost’s errands.

She was wandering around the hospital corridors looking for a pediatric nurse named Noel when her phone rang. It was set to vibrate, but she could hear it buzzing in her purse. Turning to face the wall, she fished it out from amongst candy wrappers and small smooth stones to answer it. “Hello?” she whispered as she stepped closer to the soft-gray wall.

“Did you get home okay?” Adam asked on the other end.

“I’m not at home, I’m at the hospital. I told you I needed time to think.” A nurse’s rubber-soled shoes squeaked on the dull tile floor as she hurried up the hallway. Cheryl looked over her shoulder to watch her walking away in faded purple scrubs and wondered if she was Noel.

“What are you doing at the hospital? Are you okay?”

The concern in his voice comforted her. How could she have thought he could turn on her? “Yeah, I’m fine. I’m just taking care of some business for a ghost. It won’t take long. She wants me to check on her daughter.” Cheryl hated the antiseptic smell of hospitals but was happy to run the errand. It was nice to have an easy problem to solve. “What’s up?”

“I thought you were going to tell me that you always go to the hospital to think.”

“That would be weird,” she said.

“But not out of character.” He laughed.

“I guess not.” Just to her right, she noticed a bulletin board with cards and children’s drawings tacked up in a dense collage of bright colors.

“As soon as you’ve figured something out, you’ll call me, right?” He stopped and cleared his throat. “This job is important. I don’t want to repeat the problems we’ve had in the past.”

Cheryl rolled her eyes. “I told you I would help with the case. I’m well aware of how serious it is.”

“I know. I just don’t want to let them down, and the last time you got out of the car like that, it was—”

“This time’s different, Adam.”

“I know. I’m just making sure. You’ll call me later?”

“If I come up with anything, I will. For now, I need to finish up here.” Her eyes scanned the bulletin board looking at the pictures.

“Right. So, I’ll definitely see you tomorrow.”

“Yeah. I’m not flakey. I’ll be there tomorrow.”

“Okay,” he said.

She returned her phone to her purse, but instead of turning away to resume her search for the grown daughter of her newest ghostly visitor, she lingered in front of the bulletin board, looking at the drawings of stick figure families, fire trucks, misshapen airplanes, and multicolored flowers. The bottom corner of a drawing in the center of the bulletin board lifted as if blown by the wind, but the air around her was still.

“That’s odd,” she said to herself. Raising her hand, she checked for a breeze near the drawing and finding none.
